Alison Roddy – Soprano


Alison Roddy was born in Dublin, and studied there and at the Royal College of Music and the National Opera Studio (on an English National Opera scholarship). During this time she won many awards including The John McCormack ‘Golden Voice of Ireland’ and the Lies Askonas Prize. She has studied with Graziella Sciutti, Margaret Kingsley, Catherine Malfitano, Gerald Martin Moore, Ludmilla Andrew, Phillip Thomas, Professor Oren Brown (Juilliard) and currently with Yvonne Kenny.

From 2001 she was a company principal at English National Opera, where her roles included Gilda Rigoletto, Micaela Carmen, Rosina Barber of Seville, Adina L’Elisir d’Amore, Nanetta Falstaff, Despina Cosi fan tutte, Jessie The Silver Tassie and Yum-Yum Mikado.

She has also sung Magda La Rondine (Dublin), Maid/Mistress Powder Her Face (Vienna premiere), Despina Cosi fan tutte (Holland Park), Wellgunde Das Rheingold (New Zealand SO), Lucille Danton’s Death (Brighton Festival, UK premiere), Arsena Der Zigeunerbaron (Dublin), Frasquita Carmen (Ottawa) and Musetta La Bohème (Dublin).

Concert appearances include Messiah (CBSO Birmingham, & Bielefeld), Rutter’s Magnificat (RTE), Rossini Stabat Mater, Carmina Burana (RLPO), Beethoven 9th (RPO and BBC). She has sung in recital at the Wigmore Hall, 10 Downing Street and St James Palace for HRH the Prince of Wales. Exultate Jubilate on tour with the ICO, Shostakovich 7 Romances with Anthony Marwood. Recordings include Sullivan’s The Rose of Persia (BBC /Hanover Band) and Kenilworth. Plans include Richard Strauss Four Last Songs and Mahler 2nd Symphony.
