Anthony Kraus

Musical Director / Conductor

Anthony read Music at the University of Bristol, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he won the Ricordi conducting prize, and the National Opera Studio.

As a conductor and répétiteur, Anthony has worked extensively in the UK and Europe with English Touring Opera, Opera National du Strasbourg (Jeunes Voix du Rhin), Sinfonia Viva, Royal Northern Sinfonia, English National Opera, and Opera North, with whom he has served as Chorus Master, and is currently Assistant Head of Music. He has also been involved in music-making for children and younger adults, most notably with Finchley Childrens’ Music Group and the Royal School of Church Music. He has worked as a chorus master and accompanist to numerous London-based choirs, and was Organist of St. Paul’s Church Knightsbridge.

Based in Yorkshire for the last ten years, he has conducted several shows for Opera North, including Ruddigore (Gilbert & Sullivan), Pinocchio (Jonathan Dove), Don Giovanni, Joshua (Handel), Cautionary Tales (Wallen). He works regularly with the Leeds Festival Chorus, and has also worked with the Manchester Chamber Choir, Huddersfield Choral Society and Sheffield Philharmonic Choir.

Since 2006 he has been Music Director of The British Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, conducting a wide variety of music including Gilbert & Sullivan, Proms, Opera and Musicals, Viennese and Film Music programmes.

Future plans include for Opera North in Autumn 2014 he will conduct Smetana’s The Bartered Bride and concerts at Christmas in Dewsbury Town Hall with The Opera North Orchestra, Chorus and Childrens Choir.
